Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
What is a better investment: Geothermal heating, or a 5 kW vertical axis wind Turbine?
I'm on the verge of buying a house (in the midwest) within one month and wants to cut services, so I try to determine the most savings. I know that a typical horizontal axis wind turbine would be more efficient, but Unfortunately it is out of the question (because of security and space issues) in a residential area. Due to financial constraints, I can not get both (at least not yet). I will be using a gas stove, electric because of these pigs are so powerful (if that makes a difference).
Geothermal will always be better in the long run. Once you pipe down a certain depth (usually 4-6 ft) from the earth's temperature is fairly consistent at 55 ° C. Wind energy is great! and generally a better bang for IF you always wind your buck. The problem is that unless you live in Wyoming is not consistent enough and the cost to build it is too much. Gov't grants are both well. But a closed-loop geothermal system will be the cheapest. But if you want to really nice you can do an open system: use of water to the house heating and hot water use in the shower, etc. This is much more expensive in advance it. It would completely change your heater and your water system.
